Guide to Idle Storage of Lithium Batteries
293 2025-09-26
When lithium batteries are idle for a long time, the correct storage method can effectively extend their service life and prevent them from being scrapped due to improper storage. The following is a guide on the maintenance of battery power and charging cycles for idle lithium batteries:
01. Battery holding range Battery holding range
It is generally recommended to keep the battery capacity of lithium batteries between 40% and 65%. For instance, for the 4.2V standard voltage system of lithium batteries, the corresponding voltage range is approximately 3.7V-3.9V. If it is for long-term storage (more than 6 months), charging it to 50% to 70% of its battery capacity is also a relatively suitable choice.
02. Charging cycle
Due to the self-discharge phenomenon of lithium batteries, if they are not charged for a long time, the battery level may drop too low, resulting in irreversible capacity loss. Therefore, regular charging is necessary. Most materials recommend charging every three months. However, if the battery capacity is small or the storage environment has a high temperature and humidity, the self-discharge rate will increase, and a shorter charging cycle may be required.
Common misconception correction
①When storing, make sure it is fully charged to avoid running out of power.
Wrong! Full charge storage will accelerate the degradation of the cathode material and the thickening of the SEI film, shortening its lifespan.
② "When not in use for a long time, discharge the battery completely before storing it."
Wrong! Over-discharge (<10%) can cause lithium plating on the negative electrode, permanently damaging the battery.
③ "Just put it in the trunk or on the balcony. No need to worry about it."
Wrong! High temperatures (the trunk can reach over 50℃ in summer) or low temperatures (ice on the balcony in winter) can accelerate battery failure.
